What Chinese carmakers were actually recalled for
Counting every record since 1 May 2026, Chinese-brand vehicles were recalled six times outside China, across two markets:
Event data recorder (EDR / airbag ECU)
The AVAS pedestrian warning sound was not activated
Wiring under the front seat can chafe against the seat crossmember bracket, potentially causing sudden loss of drive or an unannounced engine shutdown
Body control module
Brake caliper bolts may be under-torqued
Seat belt reminder (multimedia unit, left body domain controller)
All three BYD recalls were issued in Korea. The three from Chery's Omoda and Jaecoo brands plus Dongfeng were all issued in New Zealand.
First, the count is unremarkable
"BYD recalled three times" invites a quality narrative. Put the denominator back in and it disappears.
Over the same period Korea issued 145 vehicle recalls in total, led by Mercedes-Benz (14), Hyundai (13), BMW (11), Kia (9) and Honda (9). BYD's three sit in the lower middle of the pack. New Zealand issued 38, of which Chinese brands account for three — the same as Toyota, Peugeot and Lexus individually.
In other words, Chinese carmakers are being recalled at roughly the same rate as incumbent brands in these markets, with no sign of disproportionate scrutiny. A recall is not evidence of poor quality either: in mature markets a voluntary recall is what a working compliance system looks like. The absence of recalls is the more suspicious signal.
The defect mix is the real story
Read the six defects one by one and the distribution is striking: four of the six are electronic or regulatory devices, not mechanical parts.
- BYD DOLPHIN — event data recorder;
- BYD ATTO 3 and others — seat belt reminder;
- BYD T4K — body control module;
- Omoda E5 — AVAS pedestrian warning sound not activated.
What these share: each is a mandatory device under the UN ECE framework, not an optional feature.
- Event data recorders fall under UN R160. The EU legislated EDRs for all new M and N category vehicles, applying from July 2024; Korea first defined EDRs when it revised its Motor Vehicle Management Act in 2012 and imposed disclosure duties on manufacturers.
- Seat belt reminders fall under UN R16, which specifies a two-level warning — a visual warning at the start of a trip and an audio-visual warning if a fastened belt is released — for both front and rear seats.
- AVAS falls under UN R138, applied in the EU, Australia, Korea, South Africa and elsewhere. Electric and hybrid vehicles entering New Zealand are largely fitted with AVAS because of those international rules, and the local regulator has been moving to mandate it domestically.
The form of these defects matters more than the category. The Omoda notice states that the AVAS warning sound "was not activated" — the hardware was fitted, it simply was not working. The BYD recalls likewise point at control units and warning logic rather than broken parts.
Failures of this kind rarely surface in domestic testing, because domestic testing does not sign off against those regulations. Building and fitting the device is one problem. Proving that the trigger conditions, warning timing and recorded data fields all meet the destination market's requirements — and actually function on production vehicles — is a different one.
Only two are manufacturing defects — and they are the more dangerous ones
Jaecoo J1 (New Zealand) is the most serious of the six: wiring beneath the front seat can chafe against the seat crossmember bracket, and the notice states plainly that this "may result in a sudden loss of drive and/or the engine shutting down without warning." That is a loss-of-function risk in traffic, not a chime that fails to sound.
Dongfeng VIGO (New Zealand) involves brake caliper bolts that may be under-torqued — a textbook assembly-consistency problem.
Taken together: Chinese carmakers abroad face two distinct risks — one tests their reading of regulation, the other their production consistency — and the first shows up twice as often as the second.
For contrast: what a domestic recall looks like
On 21 August China's SAMR published a Geely recall covering the Galaxy M9, Lynk & Co 900, 10EM-P, 07 and 08 — 18,878 vehicles. Supplier process variation may have damaged the power IC inside the lidar unit, causing the combined driver-assistance function to drop out or fail to engage. The remedy is a free lidar replacement.
Both the scale (nearly 19,000 units) and the nature (supply-chain quality in autonomous-driving hardware) differ from the six overseas cases, which are mostly compliance corrections across a handful of models. The two are not in tension — they expose problems at different points in the chain.
The same logic applies well beyond cars
We track recalls across categories, not just vehicles. Applied to consumer goods the pattern holds: products get stopped, delisted or recalled abroad not usually because they are broken, but because they do not meet the destination market's mandatory standards.
Small-parts dimensions in toys, electrical safety in chargers, ingredient limits in cosmetics, stability requirements for children's furniture — all are written into national mandatory rules. Selling well at home says nothing about passing a different acceptance regime. Automotive simply shows the pattern most clearly, because its regulatory framework is the most complete and its recall disclosures the most detailed.
Three things exporters should do
- List the destination market's mandatory devices and standards, then verify each one is working rather than merely fitted. The Omoda case is the lesson: a feature that is installed but not activated is still a recall. For vehicles and components sold into the EU, Korea and Australia/New Zealand, the UN ECE regulations are the floor; for consumer goods, the equivalent is each country's mandatory standards and declarations of conformity.
- Watch recalls in your category and your market. Whatever caught someone else is your checklist. Regulators concentrate on particular items in particular periods — New Zealand produced two Chinese-brand recalls in two months, one AVAS, one wiring. - Treat a recall as a health check on your compliance system, not as an accident. In mature markets, initiating a recall and notifying owners through the proper channel is a recognised, normal action. The dangerous state is having a defect you lack the capability to detect and report.
