Citroën driver airbag propellant may alter, affecting airbag deployment

CountryNew Zealand
CategoryAutomotive
Published2025-08-01
Models affectedC4, DS4, DS5
Model year2011-2019
DefectNon-desiccated PSAN (Phase Stabilized Ammonium Nitrate) was used as a propellant the driver airbag. This propellant may experience alteration over time and exposure to very high temperature amplitudes / humidity. This may cause it to generate gas faster than designed when the airbag inflator is deployed during a crash. Such potentially higher energetic deployment might lead to metallic fragments detached from the bursting inflator and these parts could fly in the direction of the driver / occupants in the vehicle, capable of causing serious injury or death in a worst-case scenario
RemedyStop driving the vehicle immediately and have the necessary airbags replaced.
